Essential Utilities

These are utilities that I use frequently in my scripts. Some can be downloaded from the Downloads page, others you will have to get from the vendor as they have licensing requirements and cannot be made available on this site.

Absolutely must have

  • findstr.exe – a Microsoft® utility for finding text strings
  • mtr.exe – Mini True (Text Replace Utility) – Freeware from Andrew Pipkin
  • chgstr.exe – Another useful string manipulation tool from Ralph L. Brown
  • sleep.exe – a Microsoft® utility available in the Resource Kit

Incredibly useful

  • addusers.exe – a Microsoft® utility available in the Resource Kit
  • clc.exe – a simple command line calculator from Andreja Andric
  • csvde.exe – a Microsoft® CSV LDAP Directory Export utility
  • nltest.exe – a Microsoft® utility available in the Resource Kit
  • regdmp.exe – a Microsoft® utility available in the Resource Kit
  • regini.exe – a Microsoft® Registry import utility
  • srvinfo.exe – a Microsoft® utility available in the Resource Kit
  • psinfo.exe – a freeware utility from SysInternals
  • ifmember.exe – a Microsoft® Group Membership checking utility

Worth mentioning

  • dumpel.exe – a Microsoft® eventlog extractor
  • filever.exe – for checking file version numbers
  • httpgetfile.exe – for extracting content or files over HTTP
  • portqry.exe – for checking open network ports
  • usrstat.exe – a Microsoft® utility for listing domain user account status

There are many other command line utilities available on the Internet and from other vendors too numerous to mention here. As a rule, there will be a utility for just about anything you will ever need to do.
